WORK HISTORY

February 08 - April 08
Employee, Silver Bay Seafoods

I helped a little with getting their shore plant in Sitka, AK prepared for the herring season and watched a couple of (Cat) engine driven (Frick) screw compressors on night shift during that 10 day season. Afterwards, I helped take things apart and did some of the simpler aspects of low voltage wiring for the upcoming salmon season.
Supervisors:Sam Venable, Dan Glaab & Pat Glaab
Salary:$325/day to start, but Sam got me another $25/day part way through.
Reason for leaving:I left to again continue helping my sister's family with building themselves a new house.

December 06 - April 07
Engineer, F/V Pavlof

I was in charge of the operation and maintainence of this vessel's engines and systems. It has a Bergen main engines with a shaft generator and two small Caterpillar auxiliary generators, Vilter VMC reciprocating compressors on a two stage pumped ammonia system that freezes cod with plate freezers.
Supervisors:Capt Don Bersano & Port Engineer Mike Kilwein, Deep Sea Fisheries
Salary:The maximum of $350/day or 3% of the catch at sea, and $300/day in the shipyard.
Reason for leaving:I left to continue helping my sister's family with building themselves a new house.

April 05 - April 06
Engineer, F/V Pacific Venture

I was in charge of the operation and maintainence of this vessel's engines and systems. It has Cummins main engines and generators, Sabroe screw compressors on the pumped ammonia system that cools the freon 23 during production, and Copeland D6DT5 semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors for the freon 23.
Supervisor:Bob Endreson, Pacific Island Resources
Salary:starting - $300/day, ending - $400/day + any meals cooked by the Filipino crew + some reimbursement for personal food purchases + the shared offtime use of the rental car I used for getting parts.
Reason for leaving:I left to go help my sister's family with building themselves a new house.

March 05
Engineer, F/V Katmai

I did shipyard work (mostly refrigeration work) on this shrimp catcher processor (It longlines pots.) and rode it from Seattle to Hawaii.
Supervisors:Marty Morin & Rick Williams, All Alaskan Seafoods
Salary:$250/day in the yard before departing Seattle, and they paid my airfare home from Hawaii.
Reason for leaving:This is the first boat I've ever quit before my contract was completed. I had contracted for a percentage of the catch and intended to do the first, "shakedown," run of fishing in Hawaii, but on the trip across to Hawaii I found that the boat kept me so seasick that I couldn't pay sufficient attention to the things the engineer needs to pay attention to in order to, in good concience, do the job. The boat is about 97 feet long and rides like a cork. In light of four days of my time helping get the boat ready after it arrived, they generously paid my airfare home.

August 04 - February 05
Engineer, F/V Diomedes

I was in charge of the Main Engines (Caterpillar 399's), Generators (Caterpillar 3408B's & GM 8V71's), Bowthruster (GM 8V71), Referigeration System (Sabroe Screw Compressors), Hydraulics (Vickers & Denison Pumps), and all other ship's systems onboard this crab catcher-processor.
Superviosrs:Captain Craig & Jay Anderson, All Alaskan Seafoods
Salary:$250/day in the yard in Seattle. 1.85% of the gross sale of frozen processed crab for the fishing trip off the East coast of Sakhalin Island in Russia. $300/day for the trip bringing the boat back to Seattle from Busan, South Korea.
Reason for leaving: The prospects for work on this boat are slim until they get quota for it.

October 02 - November 03
Engineer, F/V Westward Wind

I was in charge of the repair and maintenance of the engines (Detroit Diesel (GM)) 12V149's & 8V92's), referigeration system (York reciprocating compressors w/ freon (R22)), hydraulics, and all other ship's systems onboard this crab catcher - processor.
Supervisor:Capt Anders Rogers, YAK Inc.
Salary:At sea: 12 out of an unknown number of crew shares, which total gets 30% of the gross sale of the crab we caught plus 17 out of a different unknown number of crew shares which total gets $0.30 per pound (processed weight) of crab we buy and process. Shipyard: starting $250/day ending $200/day
Reason for leaving: Anders cut my shipyard pay 20% just after I agreed to do a big refit that took up the Spring and Summer of 2003. I stuck out the refit and the first trip afterwards, then I raised my rate for yard work to $325/day, and he hired someone else.

February 02 - April 02
Engineer, F/V Anita J

I was in charge of the repair and maintenance of the engines (A Cat 399 & a 3406 & a 3306), referigeration system (reciprocating compressors), hydraulics, and all other ship's systems o/b this little trawler catcher boat. I troubleshot and repaired problems as they arose, and I performed maintenance tasks and ordered the necessary materials to keep this vessel fishing. I also operated the net reel and gilson winches during haulback, and cut the pulmonary arteries of a lot of cod fish, and hosed the last of the cod (& bycatch) into the sump while others finished the cutting.
Supervisor:Capt Acacio Domar, Icicle Seafoods
Salary:Starting ~ 5 - 6% of the adjusted gross sale of pollock carcases, pollock roe, and cod carcses.
Reason for leaving: The (A season) money was good, and the skipper and crew were good to work with, but I'd rather work on a boat where I'm just doing engineering, and I'm not living in a 5 man stateroom.

June 01 - December 01
Engineer, C/P MR. B

I was in charge of the repair and maintenance of the engines (Cat 399's & 3412's & a 3406), referigeration system (York reciprocating compressors), hydraulics, and all other ship's systems o/b this crab catcher/processor. I troubleshot and repaired problems as they arose, and I performed maintenance tasks and ordered the necessary materials to keep this vessel in continuous production.
Supervisors:Capt Mike Perry, Capt Kurt Henry
Salary:Starting ~ 3% of the gross sale of frozen processed crab with a guaranteed minimum of $300/day. I never made more than the minimum.
Reason for leaving: The next boat paid a lot more, and also they never asked me back.

July 99 - January 01
Engineer, C/P Atka Enterprise

I was in charge of the repair and maintenance of the engines (Cat 3508's & 3516's), referigeration system (electronically controlled Sabroe screw compressors), hydraulics, and all other ship's systems o/b this crab catcher/processor. I troubleshot and repaired problems as they arose, and I performed maintenance tasks and ordered the necessary materials to keep this vessel in continuous production.
Supervisor:Capt Wade Henley, All Alaskan Seafoods
Salary:Starting - 2% of the gross sale of frozen processed crab, Ending ~1.85%
This salary change reflects my employer's being required to treat me as an employee instead of an independant contractor. They lowered my salary so that what they spend to pay me plus what they're required to pay into the social security system in my behalf is the same as what they would have paid me as an independant contractor at 2%.
Reason for leaving: The American and Russian partners split up and the boat left town w/o any Americans onboard.

March 99 - May 99
Engineer, F/V Anita J (aka Windy Bay)

I fished king crab in the Sea of Okhotsk. On deck, I mainly sorted crab and also cut bait & worked the rail a little. As engineer I worked with the Russian engineer to maintain all of the ship's equipment. I also cooked two meals a day during days we were fishing.
Supervisor:Capt Glenn Jhanke, All Alaskan Seafoods
Salary:11% of the gross sale of live crab to the processor, which amounted to about $470/day
Reason for leaving: On the C/P my shift is usually only 16hrs on / 8 off; I only do engineering work, and the pay has been better.

March 97 - May 97, August 97 - November 97, Jan 98 - May 98, Dec 98 - Feb 99
